Travel Photos: Guatemala

07 April 13

Ok so this isn't my regular music type post.

Thought I'd through it up here anyway. I've been spending some time in my place of birth Guatemala. For a small country it has so much culture and a wide array of things to see and do.  I took the opportunity to head down for a couple of the bigger events/festivals (Holy Week and The Day of the Dead Kite Festival).  I spent most of my time during Holy Week (Semana Santa) in the colonial town of Antigua. This is the place in Guatemala that is best known for celebrations during the week.  Various processions are held daily. One of the highlights are the carpets (alfombras) that people spend hours making out of sand/sawdust.  These wonderfully colourful carpets take hours to make and then are completely destroyed when the procession comes by.  It is interesting to observe the care and devotion that goes into making the carpets and that of the people carrying the floats in the procession.

During my visits I've also spent some time in Tikal, probably the best known Maya site in the world, and the towns around Lake Atitlan a beautiful lake surrounded by three volcanos.
